Tiny Tigers & Little Dragons

Program Goals:

  • Tiny Tigers (age 3 & 4 yrs)

  • Lil' Dragons (age 5 & 6 yrs)

Sensei Nick Perdunn1. Develop social skills. One of the main functions of the karate class will be to promote social skills with other children and adults. Students will learn to show respect for others with a bow, saying encouraging comments to others, working and talking with adult teachers and helpers, to learn to introduce themselves to others, and learning to be partners with others. Social skills will also be evident in playing group games, learning to line up and following instructions.

 2. Develop motor skills. Every activity you will see during a class session has a definite purpose. While the students are having fun with games and relays, they are unknowingly developing motor skills appropriate for their age. This will include coordination skills, right and left side development, flexibility, muscle strength, timing, speed drills, mobility skills, etc. Even though some activities may not directly be 'karate,' all will contribute to the karate techniques being developed. In addition, karate training is one of the best sports for overall development that will have benefits that will transfer to other sports.

3. Promote self discipline. While we try to make classes fun and exciting, there will times when karate requirements are just plain work to learn. This is where self discipline will gradually develop through practice, repetition and memorization. At this age, practice at home should be light and fun, never make to be drudgery or critical. Also, self discipline will involve the control of emotions and behavior in class and at the dojo.

4. Develop learning skills. The learning process is multifaceted. Learning involves the combination of mental, physical and emotional including listening skills, following directions, becoming aware of one's body and how it moves in space, receiving supportive and encouraging instruction. Age specific learning skills and styles will be important.

5. Teach child safety. This will include dialing 911, rules to follow when around strangers, the correct way to talk on the phone or answer the door, our basic self defense techniques, and much more. Our goal is to teach these concepts in a non-threatening environment through games, discussion and practice, with the comfort of parental involvement and trustful teachers.

6. Develop self confidence. You might consider the development of self confidence and self esteem as the culmination of all of the above points. Every karate student comes with specific goals and desires. By attaining these goals the student builds confidence and establishes higher goals, not just in karate training but for all aspects of life.

Youth (7 - 13 yrs)

Program Goals:

In addition to the "building blocks" of the Tiny Tiger & Lil' Dragon program, you and your child are introduced to our Character Development Program (exclusive to Amerikick). This program teaches self-defense skills as well as common sense. By teaching multiple skills simultaneously, we work with you to provide a happy, healthy and fun environment for your child who will become a future confident leader.   Please review our areas of focus:

1. The Mind of a child is an amazing tool.  At Amerikick Karate Studios we will sharpen and develop your child's mind and prepare them to succeed in school, sports, work, and any future challenge they may face in life.

2. The Body of a child is the vehicle driven by the mind.  With a strong mind comes a strong body.  Improved coordination, flexibility, strength, and speed are the benefits of the world-class karate program at Amerikick.

3. The Spirit of a child will be tested repeatedly through life.  Our program prepares your child for life by promoting positive learned behaviors such as:

Confidence, Courtesy & Self-Discipline

Youth Classwhile reducing (or eliminating) negative learned behaviors such as:

Weakness, Arrogance, Laziness & Quitting

At Amerikick Karate Studios, we create an environment where teamwork and respect are clear priorities!

Adult

Amerikick Adult ClassMany of the benefits that come from putting children into a traditional martial arts program also apply to adults. The adult world has many problems and dangers that can be controlled through good training in Kenpo or other martial arts.

  • Balance, agility, and coordination

  • Strength

  • Aerobic conditioning

  • Confidence

  • Social Interaction

  • Meditation

  • Self Defense

  • Fun

Balance, agility, and coordination

Training in martial arts is filled with balance drills, stretching exercises, and many of the activities serve to develop better coordination. If you want to spend your adulthood comfortable in your body, martial arts training is one of the best ways to get there.

Strength training

A typical Kenpo workout includes deep stances, push-ups, sit-ups, slow-kicks, and many other exercises that work major muscle groups as well as the micro-muscles that machine exercises often miss. Because the workout emphasizes many different types of movement, the well-developed martial artist can apply his or her strength through full range and in many directions. The type of strength built in this practice lasts throughout a long life.

Aerobic conditioning

Cardio-vascular conditioning has always been part of martial arts. Few things are more aerobic than sparring. Put on sparring gear and face an opponent, your body will respond. The competition will keep you moving faster and harder than almost any other motivating factor.

Confidence

The mind is part of the body, the body is part of the mind. This is not some abstract new-age philosophy, it's a simple, physiological fact. The mind is an organ, if the body slows down, so does the mind. If the mind loses focus, so does the body. People who don't exercise are more prone to depression. So it shouldn't be surprising that developing physical confidence through a discipline such as martial arts will also produce mental confidence. Kenpo karate techniques are only mastered if the mind is truly focused. A mind that can accomplish a complex form knows it can accomplish many things.

Social Interaction

Friendships can start in many ways, but mutual respect is probably one of the best. In a martial arts school, you will be growing and accomplishing in the company of others on the same path. They will appreciate your achievements, and you will appreciate theirs. Not everyone in the school will become your close friend, but even those who don't will still understand and respect you because they have gone through the same struggles.

Meditation

The Martial Arts are sometimes a victim of our urge to mystify things from foreign lands. Some teachers claim that the study is a path to enlightenment. Perhaps, but there are many unenlightened people who have achieved a lot in the martial arts world. Kenpo is certainly not a religion. However, the moving forms are a place where many have found the benefits of meditation. The body moves along certain paths, the mind lets go and follows. An evening practicing forms will leave almost anyone feeling more peaceful, more content, more open to the world. This is not a mystical claim, just simple experience.

Self Defense

Some people think self defense is an aggressive response to any situation. They imagine Steven Segal or Jackie Chan beating off multiple attackers with no thought of fear.  In real life, the best trained martial artist may never get mugged. His or her self-confidence makes an unlikely target. Awareness keeps her out of most situations. Even if she is mugged, she may choose to do the safest thing, giving away her wallet. Her skills greatly increase her odds if she does try to disarm an attacker. But even a small chance of death is too much to risk over $50 dollars. But those abilities are still there, helping her stay calm, helping her cooperate, not threaten, but all the while allowing her to evaluate whether the situation will take a bad turn. It's often the people who don't really know what to do who try and do the wrong thing at the wrong time. So training in martial arts may never show itself on the surface, but that doesn't mean it hasn't kept someone safe.

Fun

We already knew this, didn't we? It's hard work, sometimes painful. It calls on us for discipline, stamina, and control. Even so, or perhaps because of all this, karate is fun. There is the pleasure of seeing your body do things you didn't think it could, the pleasure of intense physical exercise, the friendly competition of sparring. And there is the pleasure that comes from learning something new. Just because you're an adult doesn't mean fun should be left out of the equation.
